LHS 292の"LHS"は、「ルイテン半秒角（'''L'''uyten '''H'''alf-'''S'''econd）の略で、[[ウィレム・ヤコブ・ルイテン|ルイテン]]が作った、[[固有運動]]が1年当たり0.5[[秒 (角度)|秒]]を超える高さの[[天体カタログ|恒星のカタログ]]のことである{{R|luyten79}}。LHS 292は、このカタログの292番目に収録されている。
