上で定義される偏[[微分作用素]] <math>P</math> が'''準楕円型'''（じゅんだえんがた、{{Lang-en-short|hypoelliptic}}）であるとは、ある開部分集合 <math>V \subset U</math> 上で定義されるすべての[[シュワルツ超函数|超函数]] <math>u</math> に対し、<math>Pu</math> が <math>C^\infty</math>（[[滑らかな関数|滑らか]]）であるなら <math>u</math> もまた <math>C^\infty</math> となることを言う。

<math>C^\infty</math> が[[解析学|実解析的]]という条件で置き換えられてもこの主張が成立するとき、<math>P</math> は解析的準楕円型（analytically hypoelliptic）と呼ばれる。

係数が <math>C^\infty</math> であるようなすべての[[楕円型作用素]]は、準楕円型である。特に[[ラプラシアン]]は楕円型作用素の一例である（ラプラシアンはまた解析的準楕円型でもある）。[[熱方程式]]の作用素

（但し <math>k>0</math>）は準楕円型であるが、楕円型ではない。[[波動方程式]]の作用素
